Three in One
Today is day 1 of our fast and our theme next month is Identity of Divinity.
According to Merriam-webster.com/dictionary identity is defined as the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. The identity of the divine has everything to do with who God is. And thankfully scripture makes it quite plain for us. God has always existed and He is the creator of all things, because “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” ( Genesis 1:1) Not only that but God also identified the Trinity at work from the very beginning. The Holy Spirt was present in the beginning with God, because when “the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.” (Genesis 1:3) Jesus was also present. Scripture described Christ as the word made flesh and “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
Important to note “hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord.” (Deuteronomy 6:4) Though there are distinguishing persons of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one. Throughout scripture we see how each person of the Trinity has different characteristics that distinguish one from another. This is exemplified while Stephen was being stoned.
“Now when they heard this, they were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse. When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul. They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.”(Acts 7:54-60)
This beautifully exemplifies the synergistic relationship of Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit, because this was after the pentecost when believers received the promised Holy Spirit. And when Stephen gazed into heaven he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Isn’t this amazing! Such a beautifully confirmation scripture.
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit is God. God has distinct characteristics that are pivotal for specific assignments. God the Father commands things into existence, Jesus Christ obeys the Father and died for our sins so we can be reconciled to God the Father and the Holy Spirit indwells and guides us in all truth so we may live honorable lives.
Read, meditate, and pray the scriptures below.
2 Corinthians 13:14
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.”
Matthew 3:16-17
“After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [i]he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and [j]lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
1 Peter 1:1-2
“according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, [a]to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.”
Today let us draw near to God. God is always speaking and we have the beautiful gift of the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to us. May our hearts desire be to know God. Pray for a greater understanding of the Lord’s character as you search through scripture. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you revelation as you read. May we all continue to be transformed into the men and women God has called us to be.
