Our Life Source

 Have you ever considered how many breathes you take in a day? Or similarly how often your heart pumps blood throughout your body? Breathing and circulation are integral assessments in determining life functionality in an individual. After God formed Adam out of dust He "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7) The Hebrew word for breathed is naphach, a verb which literally means "to blow; to exhale". 

When God breathed into Adam, He imparted some of His own attributes for He said "let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness."(Genesis 1:26) That moment in time signified completeness for mankind for temptation and sin had not yet been explored. Adam was in covenant with the Lord as was the rest of the world around him. This time in history is a special one. A time where man was in complete obedience to the Father. After life was imparted to Adam and he received the ruach of God which in Hebrew means breath, he was in perfect relationship with God. 

We know that ultimately Adam broke covenant with God when he yielded to his flesh and operated out of disobedience, which disrupted their fellowship and created distance in their relationship. Yet God being gracious made a way through Christ for "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5: 19) This reconciliation emphasizes an impartation of life once again "for the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."(Romans 6:23) 

A humans physical life is determined through proper airway, ability to breathe, and our heart's ability to circulate blood. But true life is not established till we accept Christ as our Savior and Lord of our lives. A relationship that was once lost due to our disobedience. "But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ"(Ephesians 2: 4-5)

Therefore our responsibility is to steward this breath that God has given us. For Paul wrote "I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called." (Ephesians 4:1) May we truly ponder upon the gift of life God has given us. We have done nothing to deserve His grace and mercy, yet the psalmist wrote "goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." (Psalm 23: 6) 

May we choose our life source today, as we turn down our plates and consume that which is imperishable for Jesus said "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal." (John 6:27)

Job 33: 4

"The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."

John 20:22

"And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 4:4

"But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."

As you spend time with the Lord today, sit still and think upon His goodness and mercy and saving grace. May we express gratitude for our lives as we ask God to strengthen and prepare us for His calling upon our lives that we may walk in a way that is honorable.
