We Must Learn Before We can Teach

Today is day 2 of our fast and we're continuing our theme of "MISSION: GO"

Yesterday we focused on the importance of sharing the good news. As believers we are commissioned by Jesus to tell the world about Him. Matthew 28:19-20 reads "go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Take note! The commission includes making disciples. A disciple is a follower of Christ. Disciples are to share the good news and assist people in their pursuit of God. It's not enough to profess Jesus as Savior, He must become Lord of our lives. And when we personally experience that transformation, we are more equipped to lead others to experience the same.

Lets think... Do our lives exemplify that of a disciple? John 8: 31-32 reads So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

If we abide in the word of God, we prove that we are His disciples. In the abiding we learn the truth, which will changes our minds, our hearts and ultimately our behaviors.

Abiding in the word is a discipline that is pivotal to discipleship.

In order to make disciples we must first be a disciple. We must profess Jesus and become a doer of the word of God. James 1:22 reads "but be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

Let's do a system check. Am I a doer of the word? Is Jesus Lord of my life? Do I abide in the word, and is the Word of God the standard in my life?

We want to be disciples that represent God well! We aren't perfect by any means but our desires and intentions should be to glorify God in all things. So as we spread the truth of the gospel, let us reflect and make sure that our lives both privately and publicly exemplify the transformative power of Jesus.

Philippians 1:27 reads "whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ."

Read, meditate and pray the scriptures below:

Luke 6:40

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Mark 8:34

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

As you're praying today, ask God to search your heart and reveal to you areas that need to be surrendered to Him. Pray the word of God over your area of weakness. Pray that you will abide in the word and  become a doer or the word and not just a hearer. Amen
