The Initial Exchange
Today is day 1 of our monthly fast. Next month's theme is the great exchange. Before we dive into the greatest exchange known to man, let us reflect on the reason for the great exchange. Firstly an exchange between two individuals includes a person giving something away and that same person becoming the recipient of something else. We see the first exchange in the Bible between Adam, Eve and the Serpent. Adam and Eve gave away their freedom in the garden to gratify the lust of the flesh. In this case, the lust of the flesh was in regard to their appetite. Though we may find it hard to resonate with Adam and Eve, let's not assume that we would choose the route of obedience.
Not assuming allows us to have room to objectively look at ourselves. Prior to our profession of sin, we all walked in iniquity, " for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."(Romans 3:23) And even after the desire to walk in the Spirit, we still wrestle against principalities with a sole purpose of rendering us useless for the Kingdom of God. This may seem harsh. But we have to be able to identify our enemy.
The exchange between Eve and the Serpent started with the serpent projecting his own desire to be like God unto Eve, "for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."(Genesis 3: 5) This very thought structure is why Lucifer fell. In his heart he said "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High."(Isaiah 14:14) He then presented this sinful desire and Eve accepted it as her own.
Why is this important? This initial exchange between Adam, Eve and the serpent still informs our spiritual experience today. And we may think that it does not because we have Jesus. And this truth is important. It should not. However it does. Jesus has reconciled us to God. And he disarmed the robbers of our destinies, " having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it."( Colossians 2:15) Our perception of that truth, and choosing not to believe the lies directed towards us for our demise is crucial. We cannot just acknowledge the truth of the power of Christ, demons do that. We must receive His truth and walk in that truth that we may live our lives for His glory. And in that, experience the breakthrough and freedom available to us all through the work on the cross.
Are there areas in your life in which that initial exchange is still informing your perspective? Are you doubting what God has said about you or even your perspective of God Himself due to unfavorable circumstances? Have you exchanged the truth of God spoken over your life, for a false narrative from the enemy? We've all done it. But there is hope in Jesus through His life giving Word, for "He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son." (Colossians 1:13) And because of that exchange we are overcomers, "for whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith."(1John 5:4)
May you read and meditate on the scriptures below
1 Peter 1:18-19
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
Titus 2:14
who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
Psalm 111:9
He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.
Hallelujah! Glory to God Most High! The King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Thank You Lord for the redemptive work of Christ. Today let us make every effort to acknowledge the truth of God. Let us allow scripture to inform our understanding of the character of God and who He has called us to be. May we see Thy Kingdom Come!
