But Only One Thing Is Necessary

Today is day 2 of our fast, and we're continuing our observation of being still.  If you chose the challenge of putting down your mobile device, what was that experience like? Did you initially feel anxious, overwhelmed, FOMO, or did you feel a sense of relief, and relaxation?

Our world is fast paced. Between our responsibilities, technological advancements, career shifts, and life transitions we can find ourselves exhibiting great effort to keep up, while striving to maintain some level of control. Control really does give the illusion of safety. And that may be the reason why it's hard to trust and wait on God because we have to forfeit our ability to control an outcome. While control can seem safe, it truly limits our understanding of God and our spiritual maturity. Control emphasizes our will and not God's, and catapults us into disappoint when we don't achieve our desired goal.

But wait! There is a remedy for that. Being still in the midst of all the things happening around us allows us to redirect our attention to the One that does matter. When we shift our gaze from the world to the Lord we are refreshed and delivered. There are many things in this life that we need to tend to but one thing truly does take precedence. Our walk with Christ is of the utmost importance in this life.

The story of Mary and Martha exemplifies being still when the opportunity for busyness is present. Martha invited Jesus into her home and her sister spent time sitting at the feet of Jesus while "Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me."(Luke 10:40) We can become so concerned with accomplishment that we miss the treasure we have in Christ.  Jesus responds "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."(Luke 10: 41)

"But only one thing is necessary." "But only one thing is necessary."

When we're still before the Lord, we are setting our minds on things above, and we are attuning ourselves to clearly hear his voice. Today may we choose what is necessary. It's ok for things to wait while our spirit gets filled by God. He is our source of strength.

May you read and pray the scriptures below

Lamentations 3:24

" say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Isaiah 26:3

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you"

Romans 12:2

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

As we continue to sit and spend time in prayer and reading without interruptions, continue to pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. God sees you, and he loves you beyond measure. Pray for a desire for the presence of God and zeal to do the work that honors Him. We are created for His glory.
