What am I consuming?
Today is day 1 of our monthly fast, and next month's theme is nutrition. Nutrition plays a vital role in the cellular energy of every human being and is essential to the bodies functionality and living an optimal life. This knowledge then begs the question of how can someone apply this physical concept of nutrition in a spiritual sense. To begin the same way nutrition is the source of energy for each human, the Word of God is our spiritual nutritional source. 1 Peter 2:2 reads "like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation." Consider the dependency of a newborn child. They expect every need to be supplied by their parent. Their only responsibility is to consume milk that they may grow.
The Word of God is a vital component in our spiritual growth and development. Even in the midst of difficulty it should inform our heart posture. Job in the midst of his despair said "I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food." (Job 23:12)
As we start our fast let us take a nutritional assessment. To begin take a moment and assess what you consume the most. And remember not food. This analysis will give you an idea of what is influencing your spiritual journey. Perhaps reflect on yesterday. How many times did you seek God, pray, read and meditate on the Word, or use the Word or prayer to cope when things arose that threatened your peace? With that knowledge, how would you describe your spiritual nutritional state? Are you feasting on the Word and allowing it to remove certain thought patterns or destructive behaviors? Is the Word informing your heart posture, love for God, His people and His will being done in your life?
For example, if we can attest to the feeling of exhaustion, sadness, frustration, anger, confusion, apathy or the like, there is a spiritual nutrient deficit. For we know that in the presence of God "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23) The concept that what we consume ultimately forges who we become is found in scripture for Proverbs 23:7 reads "as he thinks in his heart, so is he."
Are we nutritionally sound believers? Are we utilizing the Word of God for our spiritual growth, or are we reliant on other people of spiritual influence in our lives? A baby outside the womb does not grow because mama is eating and drinking. The consumption must come from the child themselves.
May you read and meditate on the scripture below
John 6:35
"Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst."
3 John 1:2
"Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul."
Exodus 15:26
Saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer."
As we meditate on the truth of God today, may we intentionally create a quiet atmosphere conducive to hearing God. Ask the Lord to show you your nutritional deficits and what areas you can apply the Word for spiritual growth. May the Word be our nutritional source today and every day beyond.
